Sophie Walker

Country Representative, Kenya

Sophie Walker is ASI’s chief of party for the Kenya-based AflaSTOP program, jointly-funded by USAID and the Bill & Melinda Gates Foundation. From Russia to East Africa, Sophie has more than 20 years of experience in private sector agricultural investment, grain trade and logistics, and commodity management. Previously, Sophie served as senior grain markets advisor on the USAID-funded Market Linkage Initiative project, which resulted in over $9 million in investment in grain trading systems in eastern Africa. Sophie helped establish the Eastern Africa Grain Council (EAGC), developed purchase programs for the World Food Programme, created strategic plans on grain reserve systems for various governments, and has advised donors on the best methods for strengthening cereal markets. In response to the 2004 aflatoxin outbreak in Kenya that killed 120 people, Sophie has prioritized activities promoting the supply of safe maize for household consumption. In addition to her work on AflaSTOP, Sophie provides insight into trading systems and commodity management for ASI’s parent organization, ACDI/VOCA, and its global projects.
