Best Integrated Crop Management Practices (BICMP) Program in Egypt: Technical Assistance

This project was funded by the Industrial Modernisation Centre in Egypt and implemented by ASI in support of the program. The BICMP program enhanced the capacity of farmers to respond effectively to the needs of processors and export markets in terms of sufficient quantities of high-quality raw material that has been cultivated in an environmentally friendly manner. ASI provided farmers and greenhouse operators with the necessary technologies and knowledge to meet the highest global standards in producing vegetable crops for processing and export. The program operated a tiered training system that involved four distinct groups:

  • 30 agricultural specialists received training-of-trainers training and were then responsible for training and continued mentoring of field representatives, greenhouse nurseries, and farmers
  • 130 field representatives provided hands-on training, field demonstrations, and technical assistance to the farmers during the project and thereafter
  • 55 greenhouse nurseries that supplied approximately 78 million tomato seedling plugs to farmers by year five
  • 30 production groups (approximately 3,000 farmers) farming 6,750 acres
